Video of the week
updated 8.1.10
Too often in music we have a promising and gifted artist who leaves us too soon. For example, in rock music people will often mention Elvis or even Jimi Hendrix. In jazz, we are often reminded of Charlie Parker or even John Coltrane.
Each one of the cases I mentioned were considered tragic losses to the music world and a shame that relatively young people (Coltrane and Elvis were older than Parker and Hendrix, but not senior citizens by any stretch of the imagination) should pass on before they had even had a chance to experience more of life, and reach the greatness that their gifts showed the promise of!
Another example of a jazz artist, and the focus of this weeks video, is Clifford Brown. Brown left us in the prime of his life...he was only 25 years old when he was killed in a car accident one rainy night. He left behind only 4 years worth of recorded music for future jazz fans to enjoy, but the clarity of his ideas and strength of his improvisation continues to influence young players and students of the jazz idiom.
Presenting, Mr. Clifford Brown!!
